Hannah Walker

Hannah Walker smiling to cameraHannah Walker is enrolled at Durham College this fall where she will specialize in Human Resources Management, eventually enrolling in a bridge program at Ontario Tech University to earn her degree. She plans to work on improving employment relations specific to employees with disabilities, including supporting an environment of equality in the workplace. Hannah has been a client of Grandview Children’s Centre since she was an infant.

Her teachers say once you’ve taught someone with Hannah’s personality, you don’t soon forget her. Hannah excels in classes and has been on the Donald A. Wilson Secondary School Honour Roll every year.

Hannah’s interests extend beyond her academic pursuits. In Grade 11 she took a Business course focused on building leadership skills with the class organizing the annual Relay for Life fundraiser. Hannah was selected as Captain of Ceremonies because of her enthusiastic and supportive approach. She recruited cancer survivors to participate in the event and spoke on behalf of the student body about the organization’s impact in the community.

Despite the complications of distance learning this year, Hannah worked as the school yearbook Sales Captain. From home, she motivated a team of students to ensure that the student body at her school was engaged in creating their yearbook and selling copies of it through social media platforms.

She’s mentored teens at Grandview Children’s Centre, motivating them to try new things and meet new people. At Durham Region’s Ability Centre, she worked with young girls to help them gain independent mobility using SmartDrive Bluetooth technology.

Hannah enjoys sports—on the field as well as off. She’s volunteered at the one-day All-Star Classic baseball tournament supporting the Jays Care Foundation, facilitating ticket sales, raffles, prizes and donations, and managing the food and beverage station. She plays sledge hockey, and was voted Assistant Captain this year by her teammates—a nod to her positive attitude and encouragement for the team as a whole. Last year Hannah was selected to play sledge hockey for the Parasport Games hosted in Durham Region, giving her the opportunity to represent the athletic community and spread awareness of parasport on a larger scale.
