EKO’s Statement on Caring for Kids with Autism and Their Families

September 25, 2025

Empowered Kids Ontario (EKO) represents developmental healthcare providers who provide leading clinical treatment and programs to kids with autism and their families, helping them to reach developmental milestones and thrive in their communities. The association and our members are committed to the importance of high-quality, scientifically supported autism research—including research led by EKO members Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, CHEO, and McMaster Children’s Hospital, as well as our Children’s Health Coalition partner The Hospital for Sick Children.

We thank the experts from EKO member Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital for sharing what the research actually tells us about autism.

Children and adults with autism and developmental needs should be valued, not vilified. Unscientific, overly simplistic, and premature assertions about causes and treatments are a distraction from the very real needs of kids with autism and their families.

We encourage our provincial government to continue supporting the health and well-being of people with autism and other developmental needs through evidence-based clinical care and support at home, in schools, and in communities across Ontario. This includes timely access to care and programs, education and vocational supports, and improved employment opportunities, so kids and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities can live their best lives.
